History
The USC College International Museum Institute (IMI) began in 2006 as a think-tank museum professionals in collaboration with UNAM (the National Autonomous University of Mexico) which is the most prominent public university in Mexico. It now counts participants from six countries: USA, Mexico, South Korea, New Zealand, Spain, and Canada. IMI, while still a forum for international conversations about museums, has evolved into a more multi-dimensional and increasingly interdisciplinary project. IMI now offers lectures and workshops for the general public and professionals. It also includes the museum/academy initiative: Visual Culture in the Ancient World. IMI is presently publishing its first book on museums and the future: "Beyond the Turnstile: Making the Case for Museums and Sustainable Values". And, finally IMI collaborates with USC faculty in classes and special events.
Administrative Structure
The USC College supports the IMI and its basic needs. This has been supplemented by gifts from the Ahmanson Foundation, the American Embassy in Mexico, Mexicana Airlines and UNAM. The administrative structure for IMI resides with the Fisher Museum of Art, USC's AAM accredited museum. Fisher staff provides all personnel for IMI. IMI has none of its own employees. It has become the research component for Fisher. Furthermore, Fisher is the principal laboratory for testing ideas developed for IMI.
