Cool, grey days in LA always remind us of this painting by Cuban-born artist Gustavo Acosta. Impressive in size (the painting measures 66 x 84 inches), this work is an outlier in Acosta's oeuvre.

The painter is known for grand cityscapes that explore architecture as a symbol of power and are devoid of people. Here the subject is a wild and far-flung landscape, though the inclusion of the helicopter at least hints of the presence of humans (as the aircraft must be piloted by someone to be aloft).

Elsa Flores was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 5, 1955. At a young age, she moved to Los Angeles with her family. A common subject in Flores' work is the human figure and she represents it throughout her career, in photography, printmaking, painting, and film. ⠀
⠀
"Twins," from 1980 is one of the few photographs of Elsa’s that we have in the Fisher collection. Two young women theatrically made up sit together at what appears to be a vanity table. They make no attempt to differentiate themselves from each other (except for their socks) even sitting in the same pose. Their somber expressions make one wonder if they are also sharing the same thoughts.⠀
