💙 "My favorite work in the Fisher Collection is Mary Weatherford's work 'of whales in paint; in teeth; in sheet; in stone; in mountains; in stars.'⠀
⠀
As a native Angeleno trips to the beach occurred most summers for me as a child. My mother would drive twisty Topanga Canyon road with my brother, myself, and a friend or two from the San Fernando Valley to emerge right near The Getty Villa off PCH and our eventual destination Will Rogers State beach. ⠀
⠀
This painting reminds me of those summer days with long sunlight hours and the lack of responsibilities we now have in adulthood. The shapes evoke a beach cliff for me as do the colors and the general setting of this painting. It also reminds me that here in California we have so much access to the coastline and I have been lucky enough to continue to make trips to the beach both in college where I attended UC Santa Cruz and enjoyed the equally beautiful coast there as well as continuing to visit the beaches both up and down the immediate Southern California area. I like this work of art so much I have it hanging in my office so I can see it regularly (pre-Covid) and be able to experience that feeling of beach-going year-round."⠀

♥️ "My favorite work at Fisher at the moment (it changes daily as I regularly fall in love with new works in our collection) is Graciela Iturbide's "Untitled" family portrait. I love this photograph because it shows a father, mother, and child being together in a most basic way: just lying around together in a hammock. Their shared "cariño" is communicated by the entwined physicality captured in the Iburbide's image. And then, there is the sheer beauty of the piece itself: the hammock backed up by the overall traditionally patterned Mexican tiles. And, that hat! Tossed casually aside it makes the composition of the photo both definitive and alive. This family wants to be nowhere else but together. A wish that we all have now, and hopefully will be able to fulfill by the next holiday season."⠀

💜 "This landscape by Hanson Duvall Puthuff hangs next to where I sit in the Fisher Museum office. It is so beautifully calming. The subtle purples and pinks remind me of when you are out hiking and you walk around a corner and come upon the sun setting the mountains aglow in pastel light.⠀
⠀
Long before the pandemic and the creation of the hashtag #MuseumMomentOfZen, this was my daily moment of zen."⠀

Just kidding! We are not going fishing, but the Fisher Museum staff is on break from December 21st to January 1st! We will return to the "office," as it were, on January 4th and get down to business working on new virtual exhibitions and programs for the spring!
.
During this winter break, we have scheduled a series of posts that will introduce you to the museum staff and our favorite works of art in Fisher's permanent collection.

In Memoriam: John H. Adler⠀
September 17, 1923 - July 28, 2020⠀
.⠀
John Adler, son of Charlotte and Salo Adler, was born Hans Gunther Adler on September 17, 1923, in Goldberg, Germany. John grew up in a reform Jewish household and was an only child. As a student, he had academic goals of becoming an artist. On November 9, 1938, John witnessed two synagogues in his town burn to the ground. Following this night, his family knew they needed to make quick decisions about leaving Germany. John’s parents escaped to Shanghai, but John did not want to. Instead, in 1939, he went to Israel with the Zionist Youth Organization. Soon after, John joined the British Army and worked in the Royal Engineers branch from 1941 to 1946. After the war, he moved to the United States in 1948 where he was able to reunite with his parents. John settled in Los Angeles, where he met and married a woman named Ruth and had his daughter, Eileen, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Michael.⠀
.⠀
We were fortunate to celebrate John Adler's 96th birthday with him on the day of the opening reception for "Facing Survival David Kassan.” May his memory be a blessing. ⠀
